Cam Newton Favored To Win In Madden Cover Betting Odds

April 11th, 2012 | Author: John

Is this the new Madden cover?

Seems like it’s headed that way.

Only four players remain in contention for the semi-coveted Madden Cover contest. But all of them are taking a backseat to the NFL’s hottest new quarterback, Cam Newton.

At least, according to Bovada’s NFL Player Props.

Newton has the best odds to win the cover contest at 2/5, which would make him the youngest player ever to don the cover. The former Heisman Trophy winner made a big splash his rookie season, becoming the first quarterback in league history to pass for over 4,000 yards and rushing for more than 500. His 14 rushing touchdowns were most by any quarterback in league history, quickly erasing the memory of his checkered college career.

The Panthers saw a huge boost in NFL Betting Odds last season, and are actually 35/1 favorites to win the Super Bowl next year.

He’s the only player with negative odds in the group. Behind him are Calvin Johnson (5/2), Aaron Rodgers (6/1) and Patrick Willis (12/1).
Newton faces Willis in the semifinals, and the winner advances to take on Johnson or Rodgers.

The Madden cover has become one of the most-notorious taboo honors in the league with horror stories from playersl like Michael Vick, Daunte Culpepper and Shaun Alexander. All of them were in the middle of brilliant careers before freak injuries and off-field troubles railroaded them. Only Vick has managed to resurrect himself with the Philadelphia Eagles, seven years after he was put on the Madden 2004 cover.

Detractors of the curse will likely point to Drew Brees as a shining example of why the conspiracy is all tomfoolery. But with the collapse of the Saints this off-season, and Brees’ impending contract situation, Panthers fans may want to let Newton lose this one.

Vick and Brees are the only players from the NFC South to make it to the Madden cover.
