John Isner 2012 French Open Betting Odds

April 10th, 2012 | Author: John

It’s good to be John Isner right now.

He’s already beaten the world no. 1 Novak Djokovic. Then he took down Roger Federer on clay in February.

And now, in the middle of a terrific Davis Cup, Isner is showing a prowess for clay courts, downing Gilles Simon and Jo-Wildred Tsonga in Monte Carlo. Slowly, oddsmakers are taking a closer look at the American, who’s edge on clay is making him an interesting sleeper pick to win the French Open.

I like playing on clay,” said Isner, via the Hindustu Times. “I played three of my best matches this year, my best wins have come on clay. It’s a surface I enjoy playing on and a surface I feel I can do very well on.”

Isner’s burrowing frame is ideal for the slower clay courts, giving him an advantage. He overpowered Tsonga with 16 aces and 56 winners en route to a five set win.

“I am not surprised by the way John has played. We were hoping he could be at this kind of level and he was. He was exceptional,” said Davis Cup captain Jim Courier.”He is continuing to progress. He was a lot stronger than he was against Switzerland. My players are comfortable on all surfaces, they understand clay courts.”

Isner is listed as a 80/1 underdog to win the French Open in Bovada’s 2012 Tennis Betting Odds, still a ways behind leader Rafael Nadal (10/11), but narrowing the gap. Isner actually matches up rather favorably against Nadal, pushing him to five sets in the first round of last year’s French Open.

With that serve and with that forehand he’s got the ability to be a Top 10 player,” Djokovic said after losing to Isner.”He had that already a couple years back. It’s just a matter of really trusting your instincts and your strokes and your quality. I think it all came together for him now.”
